Coleman Hawkins, (1904 – 1969) was the one of the pioneers of the tenor saxophone. Whilst he is associated with the Big Band era, (in particular Fletcher Henderson) he was also one of the early BeBop pioneers and had a huge influence on many of the Bebop players, including Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins.
The Girl from Ipanema was written by Brazilian Anton Carlos Jobim in 1962. Stan Getz recorded with Joao Gilberto and Jobim and it was released to wide acclaim in July 1964
Mo Better Blues is a Spike Lee film from 1990. Mo Better Blues follows the life and musical career of fictional musician, ‘Bleek Gillian’ played by Denzel Washington.
In this course we are going to transcribe the sax solo from the Dusty Springfield recording of ‘Spooky’. The solo itself is only 20 seconds long and is based around a blues scale. This course is an ideal starting point if you’ve never transcribed or learnt a solo before.
I have set myself the target of learning 400 songs in ten years, and whilst working through my list of 120 songs that I want to learn this year, I realised that a shortened version of this would make an excellent course for you guys.
