This clip is based over a ii V I IV progression, (so on tenor it’s Gm C7 F Bb / alto Dm G7 C F) – an incredibly common chord progression which any improvisor needs to feel comfortable playing over.
Like Lick #2, Lick#3 is over three bars, (a ii V7 I sequence) but this is played over a minor ii V i.
Lick #2 is a very straight forward ‘inside’ lick that was given to me by Eric Alexander whilst I was studying with him.
‘All of Me’ is a very popular standard originally written by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons in 1931. Like many of the classic ‘Tin Pan Alley’ songs it has some interesting harmonic progressions which give the melody a distinctive flavour.
I have set myself the target of learning 400 songs in ten years, and whilst working through my list of 120 songs that I want to learn this year, I realised that a shortened version of this would make an excellent course for you guys.
