My Visit to Sax.co.uk in Crowborough

I had great fun visiting the Sax.co.uk store. It’s simply the best place for a saxophonist to spend a day. Hundreds of saxophones, first class repair service, a enormous stock of mouthpieces and much, much more.

Study via Skype or in the Studio

No matter where you are in the world you can now take advantage of superb tuition from me, Dan Forshaw, here at Cambridge Saxophone. I have an extensive library of over 75 different lessons covering topics from tone to time, technique to triads and much, much more. I’ve studied with some of the leading saxophonists in the world, and I’m passionate about passing those skills on to as many people as possible.

I teach one-to-one at my studio in Cambridge; or you can have lessons, wherever you have access to broadband, via FaceTime or Skype. I currently have students from Brazil, Ireland, Scotland, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Northern Ireland, England and the USA.

Yanagisawa T992 Bronze Tenor Sax Review

Here’s my review of the Yanagisawa T992 Bronze saxophone.

I ‘ve found that my choice of tenor saxophone has always been very personal. Perhaps it’s because unlike a lot of saxophonists whose first instrument as a child is an alto, I actually started on tenor when I was just nine years old!

The build quality is exceptional – as you would expect from Yanagisawa. And it plays straight out of the box!

My advice is TRY this saxophone. You won’t find many better tenors on the market today.

Yanagisawa S992 Bronze Soprano Sax Review

Yanagisawa make the best soprano saxophones on the market. I owned a Yanagisawa 991 soprano for nearly ten years. When I had the opportunity to upgrade and try out a whole host of sopranos I came back to the 992 Bronze.  For me this is by far the best soprano on the market today.

Some highlights of this beautiful instrument are:

  • impeccable build quality
  • incredible intonation
  • lovely rich tone
  • lots of colour in the sound. You can play in so many different styles on this horn.

As a saxophonist it is critically important to have good equipment. If you have poor quality materials it is always going to be difficult to make a good sound.

Five Alternatives to Fifty Shades …

Are you off on holiday soon?

Not sure which books to take?

For me the summer holidays used to be a time for a good book and a chance to create space in which to come back refreshed with new ideas. Now I have two small children, that just doesn’t happen!

Anyway, here’s a short video of five books (I only have three of them on paper) for you to pack into your suitcase or put on to your iPad/Kindle etc. for the summer.

Riding along in my automobile (with Chris Potter beside me at the wheel) …

Well, Chris along with Paul Motion, Larry Grenadier and Rebecca Martin.

The most-often heard phrase I hear during my student consultations is ‘I just don’t have the time to practise …’

I feel your pain. It is difficult to find time. The secret is planning to practise and then doing your best to keep that date … Maybe that’s another video for me to do.

In the meantime here’s some practice you can do on the way to work, while travelling around or simply sat at home.
